How Disney Rider Switch Works

The one thing families with little ones should know before they go. Here's exactly how to use it.

Last updated: April 2026

Rider Switch lets one adult ride while the other waits with the kids: then they swap without waiting in the standby line again. It's Disney's solution for families where one child can't or won't ride a height-restricted attraction. Most parents don't know it exists until they're already at the park. Use our Height Checker to see which rides your kid can go on and which ones you might need Rider Switch for.

10 things to know

1

You don't have to plan it in advance

Just walk up to any attraction with a height requirement and tell the Cast Member at the entrance you'd like to use Rider Switch. No reservation, no app booking, nothing. They'll set it up on the spot.

2

Your group splits up before the queue

Here's how it works: Party A (the riding group) enters the standby queue and rides the attraction. Party B (the waiting adult plus the non-riding child) stays outside the queue entirely. There's no need for the little one to stand in a long line they can't even ride. Once Party A finishes, Party B gets to ride using the return entrance (like the Lightning Lane tap point), skipping the full standby wait.

3

The waiting adult gets a return entry

After Party A finishes the ride, Party B returns to the attraction and enters through the Lightning Lane or return entrance. The exact process varies by park. A Cast Member at the attraction will walk you through it, so don't stress the details. The key part: Party B does not wait in the standby line again.

4

No second standby wait: that's the whole point

Party B skips the regular queue entirely and enters through the return entrance. On a ride with a 60-minute wait, this is the difference between one parent missing out and both parents getting to ride.

5

Up to 2 people can ride on the return

Party B can include up to 2 riders. So one older sibling who already rode with Party A can go again with the second adult. This is especially useful when you have one kid who can ride and one who can't.

6

You don't have to rush back immediately

Once Party A finishes riding, Party B doesn't need to sprint to the entrance. You'll generally have some time to grab a snack, do a character meet, or find a shaded spot before heading back. Just don't wait too long. Ask the Cast Member at the attraction if there's a specific time window so you know what you're working with.

7

It works alongside Lightning Lane, not instead of it

If you already have a Lightning Lane reservation for the ride, you can still use Rider Switch. Party A rides using the LL entry, and Party B still gets a separate return entry afterward. You don't lose your original LL booking.

8

It works at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland

The program is available at both resorts and functions the same way. Some Cast Members may still call it "Child Swap": that's the old name. It's the same thing.

9

Have a plan for the waiting toddler

The non-rider needs to stay engaged while one parent rides. Don't just stand by the exit. Check if there's a play area nearby, a character meet, or a snack stand within sight. A distracted toddler is a happy toddler.

10

Not every ride needs it: be strategic

For rides with short waits (under 20 minutes) or no height requirement, it's often easier and faster to just ride together twice or skip it. Use Rider Switch on the high-demand rides where the line is genuinely long.

Pro Tips
๐ŸŽข

Use it on your first ride of the day. Lines are shorter early, which means the waiting adult gets to ride faster. Don't save Rider Switch for when the queue is two hours long.

๐Ÿ“ฑ

Make sure everyone in your group has valid admission media ready. Cast Members will need to scan or verify Party B's tickets or MagicBands when they return to ride. Have everything accessible before you split up.

๐Ÿ‘ถ

A scared toddler still counts. Rider Switch isn't just for kids who don't meet the height requirement. If your child is old enough but too anxious to ride, you can still use it. Tell the Cast Member: they'll accommodate you. Not sure what might bother your kid? Check our Sensory Guide to preview what each ride is like before you commit.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Baby Care Centers are near most major rides. If you need a quiet spot to nurse, change a diaper, or cool down while waiting, Disney's Baby Care Centers have air-conditioned rooms and all the basics. Our Meltdown Prevention Planner maps every Baby Care Center and quiet spot by park.
